Bendy Elephant at a glance
Bendy Elephant is the first book for ages that I know of to combine a story of personal misfortunes with ongoing strategies to deal with these difficulties.
This novel is a story about 14 year old Luther Wiggins and his family. Due to civil war, they are forced to flee a very comfortable and feather cushioned lifestyle. During this stormy period, his parents and the community help him to draw upon strategies to deal with the difficulties of adolescence as well as the disasters they endure.
I wrote Bendy Elephant because, as a humanitarian worker in areas of conflict, I wished to share with you the feelings of utter bewilderment of many displaced communities, families and individuals who were forcefully uprooted. It is about their constant struggle to adjust to situations way beyond their previous way of life and how they tend to deal with these.
I wrote this book to show that we too can increase our ability to deal with spiraling misfortune, even if we feel we are all alone.
Civil war is happening in many countries right now. Communities, families, and individuals are misplaced, uprooted, hurt. They are terrified: terrified of not knowing if and/or when it will happen again; terrified of feeling abandoned, unhelped; terrified of terror.
Wars within many of us are happening right now. Many are being tortured by the terror of the past, the present and the future; the not knowing; the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness of not being able to deal with all of our issues.
Rather than being seen and portrayed as ‘the victim’ Luther chose to be strong, to be able to deal with these difficulties, to be like those many others that look so confident. Help was at hand to support him. Help is at hand to uncover your own dormant strategies. Everybody knows that we can move towards mastery through practise, practise, practise. People do it in different ways. Some ask for help, others identify with characters in a book and use the wisdom offered whilst reading.
So, if you’re ready to step up and be the confident, resilient person you wish to be permanently, read Bendy Elephant. Be careful though, Bendy Elephant might bring out the adventurous spirit in you!
